Bananas in the Tank

Very very cool - enjoying following this.

How old are clown fish before they’re ready to be moved to other hobbyist tanks?

They can be shipped as early as 4-6 months. The can probably be transported in person to a protected environment in half that time.

Day 8

I still don’t think they are hatching until Wednesday but I might stay up tonight just incase…

Day 9

Hatch night??? It took 10 days last time but I think these little buggers are ready to go!

Oh, and I count 113. Looks like roughly 33% of the eggs made it to hatch night.

Going to try to tick off coral before the hatch? Euphyllia like to eat large plankton… I would not be surprised if it opened up to feed!

You know the thought had crossed my mind. But I think we’re ok. The frogspawn closes up pretty good at night, especially with the parents hosting in it.

What surprises me more is that the eggs don’t seemed bothered by the sting of the frogspawn at all during the incubation period. They must have a natural resistance or share the resistance of the parents. Then again, only 33% of the 300+ batch have stuck around for the last week so maybe the coral is doing some damage afterall…

I’d like to think that the parents are smart enough to know whether or not the frogspawn is a suitable nesting site.

Anywho, looks like the eggs are on the same 10-day incubation schedule as the last batch. No hatch tonight. They’ll hatch tomorrow for sure.

I snagged 67 fry tonight.

20 are in the Kreisel, 47 are in the 10 gallon.

John, the parents actually attacked the frogspawn in the area surrounding the egg clutch tonight. They knew the eggs were hatching and forced the coral to retreat. Very clever.

Fry @ 9 Hours

I ended up giving the fry some rest last night. I’m going to double check with Joyce’s book but I think I remember reading she keeps them on a 16 hour photo period. She also recommends gradually reducing the salinity over the next few days so I’m going to start to work towards that. First water change will be later this afternoon.

WOW!!!
That is really cool, good luck with them and thanks for sharing. This thread rocks.

Nice, Jason! Great job!

awesome dude! congrats on snaggin some sweet fry

ALPHA PAIR SPAWN #3 3.15.11

Definitely bigger than the last clutch… 380 confirmed eggs. It looks like they are limited by the size of the frogspawn. The egg clutch circles more than half of the coral now (the pictures are front and side viewing angles). I might need to consider giving them a clay tile.

Very cool. I wish you the best of luck

Good talking to you tonight, Ken.

I managed to snag another 47 fry tonight. Another 30-50 eggs decided not to hatch which means I might be collecting again tomorrow night depending on what the clutch looks like in the morning.

I’m going to try the 24 hour lighting for the first three days. I’m hoping the selcon enriched rotifers are going to make a big difference.

I’ll have to get a pic of my month-old juvenile picasso. He’s awesome but hard to photograph!

you are welcome Jason. It was good to talk to you too. Best of luck! I think you have a good plan.

I didn’t have time to zero-in that new heater before the spawn. Let’s just say I’m looking forward to Spawn #5… haha.

Here’s my surviving 31-Day Old babies from Spawn #2. The two different viewpoints give you a much better idea of what they actually look like. They are finally eating any food I throw at them so I expect to see some big changes over the next few weeks.

How long does it take before they get color and look like clown fish? Nice setups this was a very good read. I have 5 clown fish now and it would be fun to watch them breed but I think setting up another tank for the fry would just be to much hassle at this time.

Depends on the species, water temperature and diet. I have perculas and it’s really frustrating comparing their progress to some friends of mine raising occellaris. Percs really do develop a lot slower it seems. This point and shoot camera doesn’t do them justice but they are starting to look and swim like clowns now.

5 Week Clownfish

Chris and Barb were kind enough to stop by yesterday and offered some great advice as well as helped me convert the fry tank to a grow-out system. Chris also took some great new pictures of the fish.

Chris having a “moment” with the picasso haha

That is awsome!! baby picasso

Awesome, looks like the baby picassos are really starting to happen!
