I figure half what the big guys charge. If online places sell the platinum pairs for $300 I’d sell for $150. If they are still selling grade a’s for $150 I’d charge $75. I spent a good $525 on my broodstock alone and who knows how much on the multiple tanks, heaters, rotifer feeds, various foods, etc so even at those prices it’ll be quite some time before I break even.

That being said, I’m still totally going to be up for trades on a local level!

I hate talking about prices this far in advance of having any babies to sell… heh

would selling pairs not induce negative gene pool issues with them mating ?

yes, technically it would. but it takes several generations of inbreeding before there are any real adverse effects. that’s one of the biggest concerns with designer clownfish to begin with.

one of the main reasons I choose my broodstock is because they were offspring of a desinger clownfish and a wild caught specimen. the offspring I’m producing are technically the first generation to be inbred which is insane compared to what you’d get at the commercial hatcheries who have been tinkering for years.

if I had to guess, I’d say 80% of the tank raised pairs you can buy are brother/sister.

Alpha Pair Spawn #5 4/14/11

looks like an enormous number. proud parent says, “look what I did!”

I know I haven’t updated over here in awhile. Been very busy with work/life but thinking about become more active with the club again. Anywho, here is the update.

I went through a pretty big learning curve but I think I’ve finally got this breeding thing down. I got lucky with the second batch I collected back in February and those offspring (pictured below) turn 12 weeks old tomorrow. In addition, my most recent collection (spawn #7) has over 100 surviving fry that are beginning meta.

Sweet success at last! Your breeding project is underway. What are you feeding the little guys as they grow? Decap Brine shrimp cysts? freeze dried arctic pods? or???

Did you say earlier that there is a ratio of full picaso to more normal looking offspring in the hatches>? something about the genetic variance? how are the numbers playing out?

I start with rotifers but that’s actually the last live food I deal with. I begin introducing them to Otohime A as early as day 5 (when you’d normally begin with brine shrimp napauli). After meta they get big enough for stage-3 food; crushed golden pearls, freeze-dried cyclops-ezee and crushed prime reef flake.

My numbers are completely unreliable because I’ve only managed to get 4 fry through meta from my 2nd spawn. Of those 4 I ended up with 1 platinum, 1 picasso, 1 semi-picasso and 1 regular percula. My latest clutch (spawn 7) has over 100 fry beginning meta and will paint a much clearer picture over the next few weeks.

Oh good! More Data on the way. You are on the edge of breeding endeavors. Keep good notes. it may help in the long run.

The markings on that Picasso are insane. Also love the platinum. Great work wish I had the time and money for something like this.

They look great Jason. PBJ!

Any pics of the new babies???

man, jason, they are getting big. the day 100’s are really cute!

Those are some awsome baby clowns, Jason!

Ken, it is still a little early but my initial observation is that about 10-15% are carrying the gene. That’s based on observing the 65-75 fry that are 17 days old. More might develop… it’s still very early.
