Beach sand

could i use beach sand from any beach put in my aquarium? wouldn’t it be just like dry live sand?

While its completly possible to use beach sand in the aquarium, I’ts usally more trouble than its worth. You will need to rinse it quite thoroughly, and if your going to go through the effort, why not buy white play sand from HD? It is much more pleasing to the eye and has a fairly small grain size. Its something like 2.98$ for 40lbs, and while it still needs to be washed very well I like it much better.

Yes local beach sand is completely loaded with polutents.

Not sure how I missed this thread. I wonder if my junk mail filter is keeping some e-mails from coming through. Anyways…

I believe it is illegal for people to take home sand on purpose from beaches. Many of the local beaches in Delaware are eroding and shrinking and every year there are volunteer programs to plant grasses to help prevent this. Also cities like Rehoboth and Ocean City often spend millions of dollars replenishing the beaches.

As Shnabbles mentioned as well there are plenty of pollutants in local sands as well. Many of the inlets in the area have signs that warn against swimming. If you add local sand you will find yourself asking every time a snail dies if you brought it something horrible with that sand. One little piece of metal could slowly kill off your inverts both big and small. Could make it hard for beneficial bacteria to grow which will break down waste in your tank. You may have problems for years with algae growing and not understand why and wonder… Is it worth $5?

+1 to what Jon said

Forgot to mention its alot less effort to go buy 2 40lb bags of white play sand than it is to lug 80lbs of sand home. And you would have to wash either of them, but only one is a nice white color. Not really any point in using beach sand in my opinon.
