Considering getting out, need to vent.

Well, I know I have been up and down over the years with this hobby, but I have always managed to hang in there. My reef is finally starting to do amazing and once I get a cheap FO tank, that will be doing great as well. But my new job sucks, I am not making the money I wanted to and with todays economy, being in college, things are tight. I am considering living at the beach again this summer (got a free house and a good paying job). Last summer, I downsized to a frag tank, no fish, and some of my corals suffered, some grew. Regardless, I wasn’t there to take care of the tank that much. I don’t want to do that again, leave my family to feed my fish and maintain the tank, they don’t know what they are doing. Also, when I am done college, plans are to move, hopefully to Cali, so I will have to sell my setups then anyway. That could be a couple of years away though. I am just thinking, I could use the money. I really want another street/stunt bike and would love to move back out, haha. I just don’t know what to do, figured I’d vent here first, sorry for this being such a long pointless thread, I’d love to keep my tanks, but I feel like all I ever do is maintain them, not enjoy them anymore. I know I’m a young kid with lots to learn, so I am all ears, thanks everyone.

At first I was shocked! Then I realized you had been way into it for a couple of weeks, so I suppose it is time to sell it all off again. Lol

Dude, if all you feel like you are doing is maintaining it then perhaps the thrill is in building and not in sitting back and enjoying. Why don’t you come up with some sort of plan to add a monster fuge, or some mangrove trees. Perhaps you could add an auto top off or water changes through the touch of a button. Perhaps you could sell off one of you’re tanks and by equipment for the other instead of selling off one of you’re tanks for a stunt bike. (But please don’t use the “poor college student in a touch economy” if you’re selling things off to buy more equipment or a stunt bike. I can understand if you didn’t have enough for rent or food…)

Or maybe you could just do one small tank, like 30 gallons, with a million simple DIYS attachments you can play with.

My suggestion would be that if you do decide to sell it all off, keep off the forums a little while. Not that we don’t enjoy seeing the pictures of you’re tanks and hearing about the next big tank, but because you need to remember there was a reason you decided to sell off those animals you had to have. And then you won’t see a dirt cheap 300g tank and get excited and jump back in to things again right before you move. Wait until you are settled down somewhere.

BTW, didn’t we used to have a smiley face. “roles eyes” or something like that? :stuck_out_tongue:

Just messing with you Jeff.

I guess its all about age!

I turned 30 this year and sold my street bike to upgrade my tank >LOL< Ive been riding for 15 years and finally decided to give it up. Just like buying another bike tempts me, a new tank will tempt you. You have to commit yourself one way or the other. Of course having suzuki drastically change the design of the busa curbs a lot of my temptation.

If you want my opinion, buy a new bike. Enjoy life at the beach, enjoy being young. When i was your age the only thing i owned was a bike, a jeep, and my clothes. I didnt need anything else. You have the rest of your life to get back into the hobby, we’ll still be here!!

I don’t want to say age has anything to do with it…so I’m glad Shawn did first lOl

This hobby requires patience, I just turned 35 this year. I can’t go to the beach for the summer anymore, I can’t ride a motorcycle anymore (well i can, just hard to fit carseats on the back), i can’t just drop what I’m doing and take off with that hot red-head I met at the bar (well again I could - but just not worth it aymore).

I have nothing but time and the time to be patient, this hobby gives me an escape from the family and financial obligations of life and allows me something to sit back and enjoy. Maybe you should think about buying the bike and enjoying the years you have to be young and carefree while you still have them. They’ll be over and long gone before you know it.

You do have a passion for the hobby, but I think Jon is right, it’s the build that fires you up, once it’s built you get bored. Maybe you can work on setting up small nano tanks and then selling them off as packages, donate them to elementary schools or something along those lines. A huge DIY project, or a ton of small ones may keep you entertained long enough to learn to enjoy the down time and appreciate your fish for what they are…artistic…peaceful…serene and relaxing.

Don’t stay off the boards though, you have a lot of experience and great information that can and should be shared with new members.

I dont really know you so dont want assume anything but I am 33 and I was a totally different person 15 years ago. Enjoy your life. I was never into bikes but woman now that is always fun. California seems to be your dream so live it and be free. A lot of us have settled down and use this as an outlet in my opinion. You still have the fire so sell it but make sure that is what you want to do.

I’m about your age maybe? 24? All I can say is I’ve got a lot of things going on as well. It’s really hard keeping everything together and it seems like it is too much sometimes. Just make sure you want to ‘get out’ before you do. You can always break the stuff down, sell the critters and fish and rocks and keep the equipment. Save up for the bike, you can get ‘stunt’ bikes cheaper than a legit bike!

First off, you guys are REALLY OLD!

Secondly, I go through the same thought about every couple of months. Relax for the weekend and if you feel the same on monday, sell the bastard. It is a PIA sometimes. Whatever’s gonna make you happy… :BEER

ive been there before. i lost all the steem after a mandarin, long horned cow fish, and domino damsel died. i thought i was going to quit. the tank was neglected for a while. suddenly after about 2 months i was back in. ive had times where i was really into it then about a month later i was completly out. i dont know much about life but i know that i was off and on about saltwater in the beginning. ( i was also diging a pond and setting up for koi wonder if that could have aided in the neglect)

Hey, how come Jocephus and bz are the only ones that didn’t state their age?

Because 1 is younger and the other is as old as Ken lol

Ian’s right. Do you know what another word for stunt bike is? Salvage title >LOL< The last time i picked my bike up on purpose was the first time i got a compound fracture. I dont suggest anyone picking up a redlight2redlight with a 10" extended swingarm.

Craig and Rawdawg hit it on the head. Your young, enjoy your life. Frankly, i dont know how you find the time now. When i was your age i had to have my parents take care of my dog, i couldnt even manage that. I cant even begin to imagine keeping a reef tank.

If you decide to roll, i still got dibs on the dragon eel for the right price. Minus my fee for all of the great advice ive given you in this thread of course! >LOL<

Im i the only old timer getting nostalgic? Im ready to trade my tank in for a busa any minute now!!

I don’t know if I’d consider myself younger, but I can understand how you would.

Ok, well first off, thanks for all the replies guys, I really appreciate it.

For the record, I just turned 23, and I consider myself old! Haha! I really really DON’T want to get rid of my reef tank. Not one bit. I want to get that bigger tank for my FO setup, and add more corals etc etc etc. But the fact that I only feed my fish and maintain the tank and never get to sit back and enjoy it bothers me. It is a lot of money just sitting there. Jon, I may not be poor and want a bigger tank and stunt bike, but I am struggling to afford my bills. My new job sucks and I am stuck at home because of it. I had the money for a cheap 180g but that was spent on bills for the next month. I know the hobby will always be there (I hope atleast) but I finally got my 120g going good (not that it was ever bad, but I love this tank). Once I get my new FO tank setup, add another emperor and queen pair, I’ll be loving it. The problem is, if I go to the beach again this summer (might have a free house and barbacking/tending job at the rudder, BIG $$$$$) it would be best finiancially for me but I couldn’t keep the tank going. Also I am hoping to eventually move away and my tank couldn’t come with me. Even though that will be a few years down the road, I am wondering if its worth it to have a tank now knowing I’ll have to give it up. Thats like getting a vlamingi tang for my 120g knowning I’ll have to find it a bigger home somewhere. I won’t know about the beach until december probably, so I won’t be getting rid of anything until then. Unless I run into some serious money problems, which seems possible since my job pays crap. Ok, well time to be young again and off to the bar for tonight, too bad I don’t drink though!

oh and Ian, I had problems keeping my bike on two wheels, its some kind of addiction. Logans daddy, the new busa looks sweet, but I don’t go fast anymore. My motto…

“speed kills, stunts just hurt” lOl

you need to do what makes you happy. sometimes what makes us happy one monment doesn’t the next. Even if you had unlimited wealth to buy all your toys and do everything. then you wouldn’t have the time to do them all. trust me i have tried at one point in my life. so you need to stick with what makes you happy at the present time. it would be a shame for you to get out of the hobby since you enjoy it so much. and i know you are always looking for that great deal on the big tank… lol
things will work themselves out. sometimes you just have to trade one thing for the other. but make sure you trade the right thing in life. wait till you get over 40 and and have kids in college… then you have to make trades…
Besides you never know that big tank may pop up.

Jeff stay in the hobby just think of how good you are now and the longer you stay the better it gets! You got a nack for it so stay in it

Thanks for the replies and encouragement. I appreciate it everyone. After looking at my tank, I would really miss it. I need to get my FO setup going, but just don’t have the money. I won’t make any decisions until december when I find out about the beach. I don’t want to move back down there, but it would be best financially. If I do move down there, guess I would have to sell everything off since no one I live with knows how to take care of my tanks :-(" Only time will tell, I am going to try and hang on for now, damn this addicting hobby! Haha.

Jeff, sorry for posting the pic of my bike as my avatar, I’m sure that didn’t help! Glad to hear you aren’t giving it up yet.

Do you still have it? What size? I had a gixxer as my first bike, then I got my kawi (which is now finally my avatar) and forgot all about the gixxer. It was a 636, wheelie king! That’s all I like and those are the best out there. The gixxer was a good all around bike, but for stunts, 636 is where its at. I want to get another one, stunted out of course, until then, my sister is into riding and has a cbr f4i. It’s lowered and just does not stunt well, haha. I’ve already laid it down doing a highchair endo, gotta get a new mirror and turnsignal for her now. I think I am staying off her bike until I get my own.

As for now, I am keeping my setups and continuing with the FO plan. Getting a 125g soon, so my eel will go in there. I won’t know about the beach until december, maybe later. Until I find out whats going on with that, I don’t see a need to sell my setups. I really love this hobby and want to stay in it. I’d love to get back into stunting but at the moment it isn’t practical. Hopefully I can find a decent paying job and save up for a bike, if I don’t dump the money into my tanks lOl

Yea, still got it. My first bike was an 04 Kan-a-tuna (Katana) 600. I put 12k on it in under a year and decided I needed something a little more fun. So I got my current the 04 gixxer 750 pictured. Its sweet! I rode it home from Pittsburgh in about 5 hours, thats always a good way to get used to a new bike, put 600 miles on it on a two lane highway filled with truckers that DONT look into other lanes before they come over. If I had my old bike I’d have been dead a few times. I’m not to into the stunting, this bike pulls the front wheel up with stock gears without popping the clutch and thats fun enough for me. I heard those 636s are great for stunting and were one of the bikes I was looking at but wanted the 750 for a little bit more grunt.

Stay in it and go cheap on the bike! I know what it’s like though. Visiting craigslist every day and looking farther and farther until you find a bike you want…for the price you want.
