Dealing with Red Bugs

Yep, I noticed these little pests on a couple small colonies the other day, needless to say I wasn’t too thrilled, and a little worried too! After researching for hours, and talking to my fellow Geeks I found that it doesn’t seem like too big a deal. Sounds like a couple doses of the dog heartworm preventer medicine “Interceptor” does the trick just fine. So now all i have to do is get some of this medicine…I was shot down by two vets yesterday… one on the phone, and one in person. I read that the only reason its “prescription only” is because if given to a dog that already has a worm infestation it can cause damage to said dogs well-being… I guess since the vets can’t milk my coral for repeat office visits, and unnecessary lab and bloodwork like they do other pets, then they could care less. At least thats my opinion from dealing with them in the past…anyway i’m gonna try another vet today…we’ll see. Once i get the interceptor i’ll dose and document, but for now here’s a video clip of the little nuggets of joy crawling all over my bonsai. Right at the end of the clip you’ll see one crawl near a polyp and it closes quick!

BTW… just incase you’re panicking right now cause you took home a raffle frag…the frags weren’t in the system that has the bugs…

I tried to post the video link right in a window in this thread, but it seems i can only add a link to it…anybody know why? is it just our forum software?
anywho… here’s the link…

Well, thats gotta be a first… somebody read Craig’s mind and there wasn’t X-rated content lOl

Craig never panics. He read this and went right to the pharmacy to get the usual. Won’t he feel silly when he rereads this and realizes you were talking about corals and he doesn’t need the meds this time

I don’t think it would hurt to try a 10 minute dip with TLF ReVive as well. I’ve found ReVive often doesn’t stress corals out too much and there are claims ReVive will kill them out right if you dip infected colonies. I’d recommend a repeat dip with what ever you do and keep a close eye on your other colonies.

I’ve never had to deal with these in my display tank. I wonder why…

Everything did get dipped in Tropic Marin Pro Cure… obviously didn’t work. …So I’m not dipping anything, i’m gonna treat the whole tank, theres too much encrusted on rock, and dipping them and putting them right back in infested water makes no sense at all IMO…

Wonder why…??? are you bragging about your quarantine everything indefinitely approach again?

How about try a pair of Dragonface Pipefish, release them on that coral, before nuking tank with interceptor.

I read that in my research Rosti, but always thought they needed a seahorse type enviroment, but your link at Liveaquaria says they are good… do you have any? i thought maybe i saw them in your fuge video? how bout the dt?

I had some heart wormer tabs left from doggie. but i checked and it 's a different type. Generic Tri-Heart, with 3 different types of meds in it. It would have been a freebie.

hmmm. DPA had some pipefish lately. cant remember what kind.

The reason for treating the whole tank is that the interceptor will only kill the RED BUGS that are present and not the eggs that they have laid.
Hence, a second follow up treatment is recommended to kill the buggers after they have hatched. And I believe a third treatment is also recommended to make sure you kill them all.
Follow the instructions from people who have documented what has worked for them
THESE BUGGERS WILL WIPE OUT YOUR ENTIRE ACRO COLLECTION.

Good Luck

I just got back from DPA, they had two dragonface pipefish. they looked very healthy and Charlie scooped some pods outta his fuge, and they went after them…but i just can’t see these timid little things surviving in a high flow tank, or eating every red bug when there’s plenty of pods in my system. I’m getting the intercepter and treating the system. And I definitely will follow the directions from the experienced ones info. Prob go with the 3 treatment route, then have a stricter dip and quarantine process. Some things are learned the hard way.

will flatworm exit work on red bugs???

I did have this pipe fish few month until one day i found him in claws on emerald crab, I didn’t know i had in fuge. Any way, I think I would use pipe fish for treatment, and they can swim in high current unlike sea horses. Most of the time the just hang around acropora colonies, looking for food. Interceptor will kill lots life forms in tank, i think twice before using it, really. If DPA has them, get it and try. If they do the job I will buy them from you for sure.

Well you are going to hate me, but I just realized that we have brand new pill on interceptor in packaging that came with pet insurance. Wife and kids talked me into getting our first ever dog 3 month ago. you can have it for free, just dont’ hate me later. LMK

Thanks Rosti for the offer, and for all the input and concern…and for scaring me again after just getting comfortable with the thought of this is the best way to go lOl
seriously though, i think for now i’m gonna treat the whole system and hope for a quick pod recovery, and follow the dosage carefully as to not over-do it. I’ve talked to some people who have done this (some of our fellow knowledgable reefers) who had good results with the treatment. I am intrigued by using the natural approach with the pipefish, but i’m always leary of the finicky picky pod eating creatures. And i couldn’t find any info that they’ll completely eradicate an entire system of the bugs. What size is that interceptor you have? maybe i’ll take you up on that, possibly come grab it tomorrow?

5.75 mg exp 5/11 for dogs and puppies 11-25lbs
I will be working from 7am to 1pm, than run around town a little. Possibly be home 5-6pm. I can just leave it with my wife on in mailbox.

The size you need to use is the one for dogs 51-100 lbs.

I also have 4 interceptor for large dogs (23mg) I still have the dog but can take him the the vet and get more.
