durso standpipe not flowing enough

so i built my own durso pipe for my new 90 gallon tank got everthing set up and filled and the water barely runs through it it wont keep up with my mag 7 that i have restricted at least 50% with a ball valve any help? i even took the cap off the top to see if the air hole wasnt big enough and still the same with no cap. i built it 1" instead of 1 1/4 but didnt think it would cause this much trouble

what size hose/ fitting is on the bottom?

I agree bigger pvc would work much better, and def would be quieter. But if it was made properly it should handle the little amount of flow you’re talking about.
Any pics of the setup? is it the traditional corner box, drilled at the bottom

Hey some one fixed his thread, able to reply now.

I was gonna ask the same questions John. I’ve been using 1" durso on my corner over flow in my 120g never have any problem what so ever.

How bout them pics Ben?

Its a bottom drilled aga overflow ill get some pics up later

here are the pics. i plumbed the sump inlet directly under the bulkhead so there wasnt any restriction there, so it has to be something with the durso. maybe i cut it too high but that shouldnt matter it should still drain as fast right

Is there a hole in the top of that cap?

Yes there is a hole I also tried it with no cap at all

How high is the stand pipe itself? Is it just dry fit? Have you tried a shorter piece?

It is dry fit I can cut it down a little if that fixes it

and my estimate is that it is flowing between 50 and 100 gph the way it is now

Your pipe looks ok but I think your on the right track looks too high

I think I’d take about an inch off, and give it a try. Just make sure you have enough room for the water that will drain out of the overflow chamber.

yeah i shortened it by about an inch and it is way better. it still wont keep up to the pump but its good enough

What are you using for a return pump? You should get about 600 gph out of a 1" BH.

If it really starts to drive you nuts you can always use two drains and run the return line up and over the back. Twice as much drains = at LEAST half the noise, likely a lot less. Also twice as safe if one were to get jammed the other should be able to handle the flow.

With an inch lower you said it was doing better, but not enough. How about an inch lower and cap off? If that drains enough, but is too noise you need to use the cap with a bigger hole in it.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

What pump are you running?

Im running a mag7 I restricted the return some and now they tun together probably about 300gph or so and the standpipe is very quiet

I’m running Mag 9’s on mine wide open, so I know you could get more out of it if you want to. Did you add a strainer to it?

no strainer just open elbow. how large of a hole do you have in your cap mine is up to 1/4" should i go bigger?. i havent tried to take the cap off yet since i shortened it, been busy today.

Less than 1/4". A picture is worth a thousand words. I think the Durso could be lower.
