so between crazy work and an injury i had gotten behind some on my tank and had what i thought was a algea bloom but after trying everything i could think of or find online it just kept getting worse and worse. it turns out it is green cyano and it has overtaken my entire tank killed all my corals except for 3 and comes back quicker than i can remove it manually has anyone had this problem before on this scale and what can i do to get rid of it
How did this get so bad so fast?did this happen over night?how did the water test? Light timer stuck on?old bulbs?anything die and is now decaying under a rock causing nitrates to spike?
I had dinos which is pretty bad. killed a lot of stuff. I did a 2-3 day complete lights off no moon lights, and I added gfo/carbon/rowa phos/bio pellets and heavy skimming it took me months to get rid of my problem but all of that combined somehow worked and got my tank to 0 nitrates which I never had before.
this wasnt overnight but by the time i realised it wasnt algae i had wasted so much time treating for algea it was too late my water nitrates are 0 which they always are, ph is 8.2, nitrites 0, ammonia 0. bulbs are only a few months old timer wasnt stuck on. i did just read the no lights for 3 days trick so i am going to try that and since most of my corals are dead it wont be a big deal for them. but i went from working 14+ hours a day 7 days a week, to a torn ligament in my ankle so i hadnt been able to spend alot of time with my tank until recently
Sucks to hear… about you and the tank :BB)
any improvement? find out any more clues on “why”
also, a lot of people will do a chemiclean treatment with luck treating cyano…
i’d just really look into the cause 1st imho. A little cyano pops up from time to time in some of the nicest tanks, but usually somethings wrong to have a full blown outbreak, even if the tanks been “neglected”
Please be aware that Boyd Chemiclean Red Slime Cyano Bacteria Remover is an antibiotic, please make sure to take your pellet reactors offline and stop carbon dosing if you are going to use it.
BTW: Chemiclean does work wonders, I,ve used it twice and had great success both times with zero loses or complications
thanks my next step is the chemiclean if the no lights doesnt work im still not sure why it got so bad i did read that carbon can cause outbreaks so maybe that is the cause
Lights out for a few days is good for algae. If its cyano lights out will only make it look better until you turn the lights back on. Cyano is a bacteria and needs to be removed and/or starved. I’ve had great success with Chemiclean, just follow the directions and don’t walk away from the Skimmer once you turn it back on.

That is no joke about the skimmer, last time I did a treatment I was using my skimmer to take water out of the tank for the water changes you have to do after a treatment.
so one treatment of chemi clean killed it all and it has almost all broken down already i did have a hair algea outbreak after but i can manage that pretty easily so once i getthe hair algea gone it will be time to restock

YahoO YahoO
Now go get that hair algae!! :-)###
Yellow Tang, or a Kole Tang for that hair algae? Much less work! I just added a yellow tank to my tank, had two little spots of GHA on some rock…within 3 days (gotta give the guy some acclimation time right) its gone!
that would be great but the wife says no more livestock till i get everything under control again since i probably lost 250+ worth of coral alone

that could be a bunch of coral… or…just one jasonfox frag ::
did any coral make it? or still hanging in there?
my gsp is still crazy growing nothing can kill it. i have a 5 head ducan that survived but doesnt open up very much, and a christmas favia from dr mac, my clam is fine and im down to a maroon clown and a sixline wrasse, and a coral banded very sparse for a 90 gal
Ben, let me know when your tank is ready for corals. I’ll donate some to the cause if you want some.
Thanks A thats awesome. Hopefully it wont take too long to get back to normal.
Where are you located bsnow? I could maybe help out if I could get corals to you. Also what kind of filter are you using?
i am in smyrna. right now i just have bio balls in the sump, a skimmer, and running phosban in a media reactor. i was thinking of adding a canister filter tho but it seems that some people like them and some dont for saltwater
canisters work great for filtering the water, and lots of people use them with success. They just need frequent maintenance. :TWOCENTS
