Only thing i dont like about lights out is my corals look awful and i havent tried this with my clam yet.[/quote]
Corals just think it’s a cloudy overcast stormy day or two. They don’t know you didn’t turn the lights on. They’ll do fine for a few days. Anemones have a tendency to wander if you leave the lights off any longer than that though.
Like John said - manually pull out as much as you can first, if it’s on the glass scrape it with a razor blade and scoop it out. If it’s on a rock just reach in and tug. A water change right form the DT after manually pulling it out won’t hurt anything and will suck a lot of the floaters out. Then do your lights out for 3 days, and follow your plan above I think you’ll be pleased.
Heres an update of my tank and here is what all its went through.
Monday-Wed
-3 days of darkness
-NO food
-strong skimming
Today(thursd)
-NO food
-15 gallon water change with brushing and removing as much HA as possible
-removed tunzes and scrubbed clean
-still skimming
-setup GFO reactor and is now running
-New felt filter sock
Here are some pics sense lights came back on today around 5.
and heres a crappy video but you get a little more views of the tank.
LMK what you guys think and i will keep you all posted on my HA issues.
I think the new reactor will definitely help with the HA. For some reason I have a few snails with it growing on their shells like beards, but it never grows anywhere else in my tank??? I really like the rock/aquascape you made for this tank.
By the way, if you still want the screen top I have it.
Ive been watching alot of mrsaltwaterfish movies on youtube and he swears by the reactors though some here and there havent had much sucess with them hopefully i will. I have hermits with it on them to lol.
Thanks on the aquascape, im hoping to get a mp10 in a few months to help with the flow because i have a few dead spots because of the way i have the rocks setup.
update: so the tank tripled in HA. Sand was completely covered but the past week and a half i have notice a significant change it has started to thine out.
Question: How often should i change the GFO in my reactor? On the 16th will make 1 month. Should i change it at 1 month sense i have started noticing change?
welp folks it now looks like i may be growing bryopsis. These algaes really make it hard to enjoy this hobby. On the edge of shutting down if i cant get any of this stuff under control.
You could try a bunch of urchins. I hear Chris and barb swear by them now, rather than snails and crabs. along with aggressive denitrating, and phos zorbing.
One thing which has helped me to remove excess amounts of HA is to utilize a rubber hose to siphon/suck the algae off of rocks. It saves the time and effort of scrubbing the LR. Your tank has just recently been moved? I would wait a few months if this is so before giving up.The tank could simply be going through another cycle. How are you tank parameters?
Thanks for the suggestions guys.
Yeah I have tried algae fix but it didn’t help with my hair algae but the gfo I’m running is helping a little at a time.
From what I understand the bryopsis is the hardest to get rid of. I’ve read that u gotta smother it out with epoxy or glue or you have to torch it. Im hoping I can get it under control before it spreads.
It seems like as soon as my corals take off and start growing good/fast the algae issues arise. Trying to stay positive about it lol.

This is the advice i will give you, purchase this one issue of AHABS ($6 delivered toyour e-mail as pdf) (Ron Shimek's Website... AHABS - Issue Four) and you will understand what is going on with your tank IF you would like to continue. Urchin is great and necessary chain of the ecosystem (Ken is correct about trying it) but a word of caution, salinity MUST be 35-37. And get a small one. And IT WILL eat everything that contains algae.
here is few pics of urchin grazing, first two have white tips on acropora because urchin ate it. Third one you can see trail across rainbow monti. Now, it’s not a problem at all. Think of the big picture, why you keep reef tank? probably because you like to watch nature reef, well this is what happens on reef every day. So don’t use any chemicals, don’t kill your “pods”, don’t kill(scrub) your rock, read more and you WILL succeed.
btw corals re-grow in few days and you will never know.
Thanks rosti. I def do wanna stay in this hobby I love watching things grow and being able to grow and keep fish and corals knowing I’m providing them a great safe natural habitat.
I’ve never kept an urchin but have web tempted to pick up and small one from fishbowl a couple times. As for chemicals I haven’t added it in the new system. As Andrew said it has only been setup sense feb so yes it is still new but coral growth has doubled if not tripled within the past month in a half.
Im finally back from my deployment and settled in and ready to crawl back on the reef horse. Want to get a few things before i start setting back up. Gonna pick up a refractometer, ph pin, some test kits and other little things.
I have a couple questions to run by all you guys here and want to decide how i want to run this tank the second round. It will stay set up after this sense we will not be moving.
Ok, Should i run this system as a DSB or a shallow bed? My sump is simple and small just a skimmer, and return pump. Theres not a lot of room for anything in the sump. I thought about doing a HOB refugium connected to the sump. Thoughts?
Also, is there a large test kit on the market anyone recommends? Im hoping to run across a kit that has everything in it.
What type of substrate do you guys recommend? Last time i ran the seafloor special grade sand and it was pretty nice.
Questions, comments, concerns? All are welcome. I will have this thing setup in the new couple weeks just wanted some help guidance as to what direction to take this tank.
Thanks for everyones help along the way and for the support while i was overseas.
