a school setup! everyone from the club donate corals and rotate time taking care of it. pick some school in delaware and donate time and stuff maybe get the goverment to help foot the bill and maybe some donations from our sponsors. i dunno just an idea.
Insurance? If its a donation I don’t think we should have a hard time. Man you can’t do anything now without worried about being sued.
I like the idea
I don’t know if you guys do it or not. But a raffle would be nice. Offer an item. Then everyone pays like 10 bucks and they win the raffle. Or the winner could win a gift certificate to Delaware PA. What do you think?
I really like helping the kids thing. Just my 1 cents. I think with the wealth of knowledge here we could make it very simple. Also we have parts we could donate there. The kids would love it.

Insurance? Yeah lots of it too…
Even a 20 gallon tank if it fails drops 20 gallons on the floor. There is a lot of electrical equipment and water; Shocks, fire, burns, etc… If the tank is banged on by a kid and breaks it would cut them and could cut a tendon in their hand or worse. The water is teaming with bacteria and viruses that can cause anything from strep to Necrotizing fasciitis (caused by Streptococcus pyogenes or better know as the flesh-eating virus). The animals (corals) in the “coral reef” are some of the most toxic on the planet (Zoa and mushrooms). Not the best things to put near kids without constant supervision. I triple dog dare you to eat a piece of that Zoa
The raffle idea was done at most meetings but the cupboard ran bare so we are in the process of filling it. Jon And Andy are contacting companys for some goodies. We will have a door prize at the Sept Meeting courtesy of Dr Mac, of a Pacific East Aquaculture Gift Certificate. He gave us a few so we will spread them out a bit in raffles and door prizes.
I really dont think the school thing is the best idea, however, insurance shouldnt be an issue. If it is authorized by the school it should become the schools liability. They are surely insured. Im sure
there insurance works a lot like home owners insurance would work. It shouldnt matter who maintains the tank.
Usually when someone sues the sue everyone involved. That way you get the most money. That would be the School, the club, those who performed maintenance and its officers. Not an area I want to get into.
Its sad, but your probably right. Just because your not responsible doesnt mean you wont get sued. I agree with rawdawg, i would love to do something for children, after all, thats the whole reason im in this hobby.
I dont think the club is at a level where we can pull off something really big, but maybe in the future we could have some kind of fair/demo type science day at an LFS. A touch tank would be cool! We could advertise event in the news journal, maybe even get them to cover it. What LFS wouldnt want that type of coverage? I know as a parent im always flipping through the 55hours section of the news journal looking for things to do with my son and i would be interested.
shot down again >:( if its a prob with the tank being broke and kids being cut USE ACRYLIC easy fix. kids touching stuff put it in the wall then they cant touch it. the school thing would be easy fun and more than likely free for us. so many people would donate stuff equipment fish corals everything needed.
There are a LOT of problems with this idea. Al mentioned a biggy. The other more obvious problem is qualified hobbyist have enough trouble maintaining a tank that is in there house. There will be lots of time when the tank wouldnt be monitored at all and the rest of the time different hands would be all over the tank. The logistics of maintaing the tank would be a nightmare. We would be lucky if we could keep a chromis alive in this scenario let alone a thriving reef tank.

Hey tattoo, i couldnt agree with you more. I agree 100% with everything you said. Like i mentioned before, the whole reason i got into this hobby is for my son. I just think the logistics are impossible. The only scenario i believe this would even have a chance at working would be if we had a member or friend of the club that was a teacher and wanted to do it for their school/class.
I think a one day fair/demo would be way more manageable and would generate just as much interest…and im not even sure that we could pull that off.

I think if we at least try. Maybe we can find a teacher that will be willing to do this. Maybe there is a teacher who was.is a reef lover. Or at least would be willing to try? I don’t know. I think it is a great idea. Problems are to be solved. Hey maybe i’m new and excited because I too have kids. They love the tank. But this is teaching me something else. Patience and relaxation. Two things I need more of. But lets not let the idea die. Maybe we can brainstorm? Or maybe not.

Maybe we can just pool the money. I know people have tanks that are fully stocked with equip or corals or whatever. So if we have 10 people at the meeting we all put in 10 bucks. The raffle winner would get it 100 bucks to the store. Then we could ask for discount since we are buying a gift certificate that could only be spent there. This would help the LFS and club winner. DRC lottery anyone?

Just trying to think thats all.
well shit how about at every meeting or event we do a 50/50 raffle and tickets for members be cheaper but non members full price. good thinking on the lottery thing rawdawg i think if people had stuff like that at every meeting it would draw alot more people. we def need a club tank setup somewheres. or maybe 2 tanks a northern tank and a southern tank so it would be easier. i dunno just trying to think of stuff
"If it is authorized by the school it should become the schools liability. " Unfortunately they already turned us down. Ken had this idea a couple of years ago. It may have seemed like the idea was quickly rejected, but that was because we had discussed it in the past. Someone brought this idea up a while ago and we hashed the idea out for a while, but it is just not going to work. Fact is we have 3 members that religiously attend meetings. How are we going to get even 4 members once a month to go clean up fish poop for someone else. Let alone ask a teacher to take the time of their busy schedule to feed. A club in southern PA tried a something similar with an old flokes home. I bought the used tank off them a year later when the members of there club(about 5 times the size of ours) were too busy to keep up with it.
I will be working hard to get raffle items(we already have a couple) and something like Tank of the month(TOTM) up before the start of the fall season.
The tank is not going to happen at the current time. When I first joined DRC I wanted to have a community tank and thought why not also. I suggested a school tank and a tank sponsored by Drc in a local store. Where we could all schedule some time to have a beautiful tank. Beside the liability there are many big issues that were brought up to me by Ken, Ted, Joe, Craig, and many others. After running the club for a while I see why. It is hard to get involvement from members on a consistent basis. It is hard to get volunteers for any Drc projects. When I scheduled the Diy Rock meeting that 15 people wanted, 2 people showed up. Not a great showing.
As we get larger we may be able to do this in the future but it won’t happen anytime soon. At the current time it is not feasible.
We can look into the 50/50 raffle not a bad idea. I doubt someone coming every month would be interested though. Purchasing raffle tickets for prizes works well.
Or maybe we get an advanced list of small donated frag corals, combine the frags and have a raffle of the items. Meaning 10 people bring a small frag we put them together and draw a winner of the frag pack.
edit… started this post before Jon posted but it was me who brought up the idea way back when
I didn’t see the second page when I wrote my post.
I 100% understand the idea of wanting to share and be generous. About 4 years ago I decided I wanted to be a science teacher in a high school and I planned on filling my class room with animals. I wanted a salt tank set up, and a couple of docile reptiles. I was going to go all out and use them as educational tools. I was all about it. More involved I got in the hobby I realized how horribly destructive the hobby is. So now I’ve switched to aquaculture as my carrier.
Lets push this idea after a year of consistent showings at DRC events. First and for most we need to concentrate on the reason this thread was started. We need to grow our member base. Once we have more registered members and more involved members then we can reach out a little.
Maybe it’s the fact that I was forced to watch the movie, “What about Bob?” on my vacation and have the words, “Baby steps” stuck in my head or maybe it is because I know some of the people posting are antsy and can’t wait a whole year for things to happen, but I have another idea.
If we really want to do something now perhaps we could start with speaking to a Boy Scout club. I will volunteer Delaware Premium Aquatics as the place for these talks if someone else will help organize the event with the scouts. We could talk to them about how interconnected our world is to the reefs after showing them some of the beautiful animals and explain how they need our help. Won’t be difficult at all just show them a clown fish and tell them they can save Nemo.
This is a small step that we can make and work our way up to perhaps giving a small presentation at a school before punching a huge whole in there wall and sticking a tank in it which will need a month to cycle with out animals.
