I posted this yesterday but today its gone, not sure why thou, so here it is again, hope I didnt brake any forum rules. If i did pm me. :o
We have probably 25 or so lbs. of Lace rock. maybe a small frag for trade. but yea its free. Take some or take it all, its up to you. great for fresh water, ciclids etc. probably wouldnt use in a salt setup. Thanks
i have also heard that some ace rock will affect the ph. ken said he has used lava rock from lowes to use as a form of bio filtration. maybe you should pm ken and ask what kind he used
yeah, I have used red lava rock from K=Mart garden center for bio media in the frag tank for a year or two. It worked, just another porous rock. But i recently swapped it out for a gallon of 1 inch bio-balls which seem to work better at keeping the tank clear of slime. probably more aeration and stuff. but if you have enough of anything, it makes good bio media. just maybe not the best.
I’m getting ready to send this out to NCPARS, NJReefers, and DelVal regarding the proposed April shindig with Sprung. Two things I’m looking for:
(1) What other clubs should I poll?
(2) Any additions/deletions/corrections to the email. (Keep in mind - I want to avoid talking $ numbers initially in an intro. letter like this one.)
Letter/email follows:
My name is Ted Neeves, and I’m the current Secretary of Delaware Reef Club. Our club, and likely Diamond State Aquarium Society, will be sponsoring a talk by Julian Sprung in April, after the HH Backer Spring09 Trade Show. The dates of the trade show are 3-5 April 09. The most likely time frame of Mr. Sprung’s availability would be the evening of Sunday, 5 April. As these plans are not yet totally firm, I would ask that you restrict advertising just yet.
The two main purposes of this communication are (1) to gauge interest in your club’s membership attending the event and (2) to gauge interest in your club co-sponsoring the event.
First, for planning purposes, we’re asking right now if you could give us a ballpark guess as to the amount of your membership that might be interested in attending this event. I realize that might be difficult without some sort of announcement, so keep in mind that we’re certainly not looking to nail specific numbers down. But a general feel on potential or likely attendance would be great for our planning needs.
This is currently planned as an event that would be free to attend. As such, the expenses would be born by the sponsoring club(s), although not necessarily equally. As the primary sponsor, Delaware Reef Club would obviously bear the loin’s share of the expenses. So, additionally, we’re also interested to know if this is something your club would be willing to co-sponsor.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, and I look forward to hearing from you.
I would almost leave out the fact that he will be in the area for the backer show. Many of the clubs may not know what this is and leaving out that info would make it look as if we were going to have to pay more for plain tickets and such. Also makes the e-mail shorter and quicker to the point. Either way.

First observation is that I assume you meant to say “Lion’s share” - I’m not sure I want to know what a “Loins share” is :SPIT)
I would use different terminology other then “Co-Sponsor” offering co-sponsorship invites them to have a say on entrance fee, locaton, amenities, etc.
Can we hold off until the follow-up email and ask for a donation once we have an idea of how many members they think will attend? if they say 5, do we want to ask for a $50 donation? If they say 100 do we want to ONLY ask for $50?
So just invite them.
We could mention sharing some cost based on attendance but do we have a ballpark what this will cost? If its less then $200 I say let the club eat it as an advertising expense. We could push it in the LFS, RC and on this site. A couple of our members have dual memberships between DVRC and here and with permission we could post it on their boards as well.

Well once we figure out how icy gets his computer to read all of the posts and post something that seems to make sense while he sleeps then we can all keep up.
Ah, so that is why Icy was all excited about the number of posts in the last month. Had nothing to do with club growth. He just realized he was close to the number one spot during the busiest time and needed to create another thread to boost his post count.
“Do we have any estimate from Mr. Sprung how much it would be to come speak?” We don’t really have any idea at this point. We agreed at the meeting though that if it was less then $300, and potentially even more, the could just obsorb the whole cost. Fact is we brought up the idea of spending money again and no other ideas came up besides a behind the scenes tour at an aquarium which was shot down… Actually there was another idea, Ted how about that Sea Horse place? Did you find out the name of it?
These conversations go so much easier in person I’m already tired of typing and you guys have 5 other threads started.
