Our new additions ('Marlin & Dory')

We recently got two new additions that are in QT until the 75 is done its cycle/I do the move.

A small baby tomato clown to go with ‘Nemo’, named ‘Marlin’ of course, even though it’s a bit backwards in size and we’re hoping ‘Marlin’ and ‘Nemo’ get the groove thing going on.

We also got a baby hippo, guess what we named ‘her’? ‘Dory’!

They’ve both been in QT for about a week now and are little piggies.

not a fan of hippos, but the clown is a cutie.

We have a “No names for 10 days” clause in our house, just in case. Saint:)

That’s a very good idea, but these guys are so cute, it’s hard not to get attached! I didn’t want to post pics in case they didn’t make it but its been over a week now and they seem to be doing very well.

nice looking fish and always lov hippos. u know they have yellow belly ones. they look pretty cool. do you think he she will be ok in a 75? i thought al had one that started to get agressive. regardless he should be fine for a few years. hope all goes well

Nice hippo. I’ve heard that they might nip at corals, especially zoas. You might want to keep an eye on this. IF he does start to nip at corals, you have a great excuse to start another tank… lOl

OR he could give all his zoos to me. dont worrie ill take them off your hands.

I think she’ll be ok in the 75 a few years, then maybe a reason to upgrade… I know I saw the yellow belleyed ones, very cool looking. Of course I saw them AFTER we got this guy (gal), but it was pretty much an impulse buy anyway… I’m bad for that

And if she picks at the zoos then I guess I gotta get another tank right?

lOl maybe u guys arn’t getting this ill take the zoo lOl jk

I’ve never heard of a hippo messing with corals. Tangs in general are very hungry animals and perhaps if they are not fed properly they’ll start to pick at anything, but I have seen tons of hippos in reef tanks with out problems. Were there specific people that mentioned this problem?

Glad to see the live algae in there. Was going to suggest it when I saw you had a young hippo as they require a great deal of feeding. Seems like you are on top of things.

Nice decorations btw, lol. Someone found something usefull to do with all those old fresh water decorations.

I hear ya on that one. Me to. Just looked at my finances last night and realized I needed to slow down on the coral buying. I bought two corals today.

AHHHHH they are cuties. I love hippo tangs. I remember when mine was a baby. Mine is called Dory also. I usually don’t name my fish, but my granddaughter Destiny insisted.

Enjoy them.

So plan on an upgrade.
I had my hippo in the 75 and that lasted 2 years before she was too big for the tank. I sold here as she was starting to have territory issues. She was awesome and here and the yellow tang got along great. The stunning contrast between blue and black is awesome. Did I mention her speed? That is hands down the fastest fish in the tank when she gets moving.

It is just caullerpa I am removing from my display tank, it doubles as a bit of filtration, hiding spot, and possible food. Although she doesn’t care for it, just looks at it, picks everynow and then, and hides in it. She seems to readily and happily take flake now, I’m trying to get her to try new foods, by mixing the flake she likes in with other things. I think they’ll eat anything out of my dropper now and they run up to the surface as soon as I show up with it. I’d like to get some Gracilaria, I hear tangs really like it.

Yes, I’ve been trying to find somewhere to put the scuba diver lol.

i really wouldnt worry about garlic. my naso would jump out of the tank and try to find the flake food without garlic. there verasious eaters.

Keep it varied. I used flake Spirulina but every thing else was fresh or frozen.
Dried nori
flake Spirulina
frozen broccoli
fresh banana
Frozen homemade food see thread

I really had a beautiful Hippo
I read at different stages of there life they turn from Herbivorous to carnivorous. I think the varied diet added to here amazing growth and beautiful color. I got her <2 inches and sold her 2 years later >7 inches when she was too big for the 75

Not garlic, but Gracilaria, it is a type of macro algae. She eats flakes fine. I’ll try the brocolli and banana. What is the spirilla flake?

o…ok. off to google then
