power head

what is a good power head. i am running one zoo med power sweeper now. my other one crapped out and will olny stay in one place plus the suction cups will no longer stick and hold on. (porbably from trying to pull it off by force) . does anyone have a slightly used power head or sweeper. i can trade frags or cash. brett

power sweeper can be cleaned and fixed. you can also get new suction cups.

The power sweepers get crud around the shaft and stick. A stiff bristled brush works wonders for cleaning them off. I use a baby bottle brush. Mine used to get caked up with coraline and I would have to scrape it off every few weeks.

The suction cups on those things stink. I’d take Icy’s idea and mount it to a Mag Float with epoxy, then it will not oly stick, you can move it around without getting your hands wet.

Looks like you’re posting two questions there. To answer you’re first question what is a good power head, there is a lot of debate about that. Supposedly the Tunze are the best, but they are very large and most of their good ones are designed for larger systems.(not to mention they cost about 5-6 times what they other power heads cost) Hydor’s Koralias are very nice accept for one little problem. Occasionally they do not turn on after a power outage. I wouldn’t recommend anyone use the Koralias as the only type of flow because of this, but if they also have a return pump or a second power head in the tank they are probably the best buy for you’re $. They also use less electricity, so perhaps you can convince you’re Mom to help chip in as it will save a little $ on her electric bill. That’s my opinion.

Which tank are you using it in? I may have a spare power head for you’re 10g I could trade, but don’t have anything extra that would work well for you’re bigger tank currently.

Oh and I second the mag float idea. Magnets are the best way to attach power heads. It is a shame not all of the manufactures have caught on to this and we still have to rig them ourselves.

Jon

i still have the 25 gallon. it would be for the 25. i was thinking of getting the koralias because of the flow design. how much$$. the money plant is look’in good. i have like 6 frags of it . i’ll bring some in the next time im at premium.

whaen i shook it it rattled. it still pumps but will get stuck in one position

I wouldn’t worry about it not “sweeping”, chances are it is providing plenty of movement without. In a small tank, you don’t have to have a ton of powerhead to get a ton of water movement. Remember that the only thing you can measure by powerhead ratings is the amount of water that passes through it. This does not always correlate to the amount of water movement in the tank. If you position it so that it gives you good circulation, you’ll be fine.

PS I have Koralia 4’s in my 125, two on one side, two on the other. Kind of a loop.

how would one obtain said epoxy. what size mag float. i had the two power heads running before and had awsome flow. i cant use the power head because of no suction cups, rotation of the head was a bonus.lol.

You can get GE [glow=chartreuse,2,300]Silicone I[/glow] (make certain that it does not have mold inhibitor) from HD, or Lowes. I would just use superglue gel.

You can also use coral epoxy. Available at TB aquatics. TPP etc.

You can buy two part epoxy or aquarium silicone in the adhesives aisle of Home Depot or Lowes. Either would work. As far as what size magnet to use it depends on your tank size. In keleigh’s 15g we used the mag float that is about 3 inches long, but on the 90 we used ones that were about 4 inches long. If you have any doubts, get the one that is rated for your tank size or the one larger, but not the one smaller.

I also recommend the Koralias. I have a 3 and a 4 in the 75. they push a ton of water and are almost completely silent.

My Maxi-Jet that I use for rock curing is so good its shocking! No really, that’s why I only using for rock curing, I just hate when I forget to unplug it before sticking my hand in…

i think i may have fixed it we will see after i test it in a few hours

Why no mold inhibitor? (toxic?)

That mag float idea sounds awesome! Especially since I never use my mag float type thing and my suction cups are about dead on my powerhead (its perched on a rock right now).

bz350, hope it works!

well it is fixed. something was loose. it work much better now. now all i need is another mag flote and some super glue. u know i stoped off at the dollar store just for super glue gel. had 0. looked threw all of them and found one. i was looking for like 5. craig i have reason to belive ur hording super glue.lol

Mold inhibitors will be released into the water and kill both good and bacteria. Live Rock, Sand etc

You’re probably right, but I don’t know it yet. My wife fills my stocking each year with Super Glue Gel and Duct Tape.
