Hey everyone, was wondering about thoughts on using purple up in my tank. Seems to make sense as long as i check the calcium levels, i have coraline now on the glass… no spots bigger than a pea. Some others members i spoke to are big fans of it…
thoughts anyone?
Purple Up will make your rock purple. There are less expensive things to do, such as control calcium and magnesium, but Purple Up will make your rock purple.
coralline’ll spread w/out spending the $$ for purple up.
correct this statement Purple Up will make your rock purple
to
Purple Up may make your rock purple.
I have half a bottle of purple up and a bottle of reef accelerator from IO that is suppose to boost coralline. If you want them let me know…
I’ve had great luck with it in the past, Paul have you had other experience? But to confirm, there are less expensive ways.

This again facepalm >LOL<
Purple up does absolutely NOTHING.
I can’t believe they can even sell it. Its magic snake oil. Voodoo juice.
It is water, and aragonite silt. The only way it could boost calcium in your tank is if your PH is around 7.6 than it will start to dissolve. Other than that its exactly the same thing your sand and live rock is to your tank.
There is noting else in that purple bottle.
The only thing you need to do to get your tank purple is keep the calcium above 400 and water warm.
I think it has more than water and aragonite silt…check the label
does not say it says its Ionic Calcium and Micron Aragonite
joe, i used it, and have no complaints. but i doubt it really did anything.
we can change our usernames? ??? thats not good…

Alright… back to the purple up… lots of opionions, anyway, i was curious about the calcium levels, so ,that was a good enough excuse for me to head to DPA… survey says Calcium 400
Advice please
thanks guys
Personally John I’ve used it a LONG time ago. I thing it is something people new to the hobby get to try and start there Coraline. Coraline is based on light level and nutrient levels. I remember reading somewhere think is was on GARFS site. If you run the atinic lights for a month straight with no other lights and the cal , mag ,and alk is up to where it is suppose the coraline will grow and spread very nice. The purple up and there is another is mainly a high level of calcium and trace elements. If you a real bright light meaning 10k the coraline will not grow as well, 20k lights bring it out little better.
Thanks… and i was wondering if calcium level is good at 400, or change it. the api box says between 400 and 500 is good, but then again the salt bucket says .021 - .024, …so i thought i’d ask
if u keep parameters around where they should be you will be fine. like everything in this hobby it just takes time.
one thing that would help is if you could get some coralline shavings from someone.
cal is good at 400.

If you mix at 1.026 vs. 1.021 your Calcium will be higher.
Purple Up has been confrontational since the day it hit store shelves. Some people believe it is a miracle in a bottle, others swear it’s snake oil.
I don’t know of anyone that’s done any comprehensive experiments to determine if it’s worked or not.
When it comes to growing coraline algae you must have some to grow some. It won’t just appear out of nowhere. If you already have some growing on the glass scrape it off with a razor blade. I know it sounds counter productive but what you’re doing it spreading a small spot out in to thousands of coraling seeds.
If you know someone that has a good strong healthy fast growing coraline you can ask them to scrape some off their glass and use it to a seed your tank.
I did this for a member a few years ago and he didn’t stop cursing me until he sold his tank. I still have this strain of coralin in my tank so if you need some I can scrape and bag some up for you.
It takes time to grow and often times you won’t even notice it - it starts as a small white dot that many people will scrape off with a mag-float not realizing it’s the beginning stages of something they want to have.
