Refugium Help

Ok, I have a 24AQ I’d like to equip with a fuge, instead of the back chamber, it looks kinda ugly, I was thinking i could put a 5 gallon Glass Aquaium under the stand ( outta site, Outta mind). So ok, I dont know how i could run the water to and from the aquapod… Would that be the same as a sump? Goal is to make a quiet home for the good pods etc… and algae … Help would be greatly appreciated. Im googling now and dont see how i can do this. Its like a 3-5 foot placement underneath

do you have room to fit an overflow or do you want to see if you can possible turn the back section into one? if you have room for the overflow box all you would need is a return pump and some plumbing

overflow… like something behind my tank? or above? also how could you turn a chamber into one? I dont wanna drill no matter what

There are a couple things to consider here, placeent, size, and method of mvoing water.

Problem
A 5g aquarium underneath really is not going to give you room to set up a functinal refugium. the macroalgae is going to need to be kept seperate from the return pump to keep from getting caught up in the impellar and burning out your motor.

The 5g refugium would also become a sump, which is where you’re going to see your evaporation. I evaporate about 2-3g a day from my 75. If you evap this much you are going to end up running your return pump dry (assuming no ATO) and will burn out your pump.

You would need to use a hang-on over flow box to transport water from the DT to the sump/fuge. Not only are these terribly unreliable and subject to flooding, I am not sure wehre you would put on on that tank.

Solution
They make hang on refugiums for just such a tank. Take a look and see what google has to offer. You may also want to check out nanoreef.com or reefcentral.com to see what others are doing.

hmmm, 143.00 for 2.5 fuge with lights. That would be sufficient?

For a 24g I would think that to be sufficient.

Or find a used one of these and add a light

Aqua Clear 110 Power Filter
Size:
13 1/2"L X 6 3/4"W X 9"H with 4" of its width behind the tank. aka = 3.6 gallons (per RC)

Used, you can scoop one of these up for cheap. You will need to remove the filter and add a small piece of egg crate to complete the mod. They come with a pump that should provide adequate flow and will be a safe way to move water through a sump without a substantial risk of spilled water

where can i find that light?

among others

NICCCCCEEEE. lol thanks

Al’s is definitely the way to go, but ive got to ask, why not use the back chamber?

all you have to do is throw some rubble rock in the bottom, throw a clump of macro in the top, add a light and your done! to keep it clean, what i did was buy the cheapy coralife mini 50/50 pc light and let it hang on the back of the tank. instead of having it over the tank, it lights the fuge through the glass. you dont see it, it doesnt get coated with salt spray, and your macro grows like crazy. the other AWESOME thing with this method is that the light will reflect off of the glass on your hood and softly illuminate your tank at night creating a very cool moon effect. its very subtle but looks cool.

between the cost, i did have the back chamber as a fuge, actually if i can find the light, i might make the box covering and add tin foil as a reflector. i want to add a HOB filter, for cArbon so … choices need to be made.

Pods will flourish in the back?

Pods will flourish in the back?[/quote]

With a food source and no predation pods will flourish everywhere.

awesome!!!

just dug this light up, put behind chamber one, it will work? Sufficient light?

Looks like it would work. It’s even in a good spectrum for macro algae growth.

awesome… should i wait for the cycle to pass or go get some macro now? pods grow from??? do i need to buy them?

i’d put the algae in now… its not going to hurt anything as for the pods you can get someone on this forum to give you clippings of there macro algae which will contain your copepods

does any1 have any algea i could buy / have? I live in west chester close to DE, we can meet at any LFS

I might be going to dpa this weekend and could bring a small chaeto bit with me.
