snail id

are these pyr. snails? paul saw them in person and says no.

Yes ::hitsthefan::

I guess thats the quick answer, your supposed to be able and id them with magnification, and examining the shell swirls.
But they’re hosted by a snail, i’d say yes… they’re not grazing algae on the least lit part of a snail shell.

If so, don’t panic… but check your clams, they didn’t seem to do any fast damage to mine but they multiply quick if they get the chance.

there are none on the clams, are you sure? we looked under a microscope the hole for the snail is large and the spiral looks different to a confirmed pyr. snail, not a chance they are baby ceriths

Maybe ::thinking:: did you guys get a positive id? i’d like to use whatever info you have to check a bunch of shells i saved.

paul has a confirmed pic he can post it here hint hint. It sure seems they are pyr. all bunched up on the snail like that i have egg masses all over the place i have a lot of small circular snails as well that are always everywhere but more noticeable at night and these little snails are on them too but they are also on the glass and not always under the snail by the flesh. I have been reading that there are many pyr. types clam only or snail only I will clean any i see off my snails just in case. Another thing is that my little snails don’t grow up, it seems that they live a little then disappear. Some in the fuge get bigger but don’t think full size.

any info on the snail egg sacs? pics i have so many eggs from snails too

pyrs are always described as the size of a grain of rice. during both of my infestations, i never found any snails the size of tim’s. i mustve found 50 snails all the size of the ones in the pic. john, u ever see any that small?

.
under a 30X scope, they really do look different.
tim you need to pick up yr clams after lights out and examine them all over w/ the flashlight to make yrself feel better, hopefully not worse. btw, have you put any cuc or snails in the tank recently?? if the snails are on yr big snail yet you did NOT get any new snails, then those little ones came from inside your tank.

i wamt an update when i wake up !

i did get some nasso snails but these snails have been here a while i haven’t bought snails for a while i think dr. mac a long time ago and they were nassarious too. I think they are pyr snails and i think they prey on snails the more i research it the more i am convinced of that i just cleaned all snails off. I have trochus or trochus/turbo snails that have the most. maybe one or two on half of the nerite snails i have. I’ve been reading that the trochus get the snail preying pyr. the most and i only have like 3 of them. so hope to keep cleaning and they will be gone. I did check the clams and didn’t see any I didn’t pull the clam out though If that is recommended i will do it. I did see a lot of small round snails. and other stuff on the clams but nothing around the mantle.

Identify This... Rissoid And Pyramidellid Snails the pics don’t match but who knows

Thanks for all the info Paul and Tim.
Yes Paul, i’ve had them the size in your pic. not too many…but at times several small ones in clusters on my snails, and clams… clams, they seem to gather at the front of the mantle and near the foot opening. egg sacks were in the folds of the shell, and near the foot/bottom. When they were bad, it seemed the squamy was their favorite though. my first little blue maxima was “irritated” once by them (wasnt opening all the way, and kept “twitching alot” ) that was when i very first noticed them. i cleaned it off, and it opened up all the way 20 mins later. I isolated them in dishes, and did the regular cleaning them thing for months … I never noticed any effects to the clams after that… and, i never really got them under control until i removed all the bigger snails from my system ( the little tiny round ones still come out at night by the hundreds.)
i still have some “pyram looking” ones, but them seem to graze algae, and are always 4 ft away from any mollusks bigger then they are.

I still need to read up on these, and try to get a positive id on mine. I havent been worried about them anymore 24 - 7 now, dont seem to be bothering anything, but it would be nice to be 100% sure.
I mailed some recently to a reefer in florida, (snail collected ones and clam collected ones…all sizes)
i’m waiting to see the microscope photos she’s taking of them.

IME with these snails (pyrams, or whatever they are) if they were hurting anything, it wasn’t quick damage at all.
so try not to freak out…

I’m getting a microscope!

we need chris and barb to get in on this id discussion. one quote
there are over 8000 species of pyramidellid snails throughout the oceans,

Quoting from StoneReefer_210:

“OMG!! I just ran up to the tank, pulled up a sleeve, grabbed then chucked the snail into the woods.”

Maybe this will help get rid of what ever it is in your guys tank! hehehehe (no animal harmed in this statement).

I’m using them as bait. To get rid of them gotta be something bad to be hiding out on a snail

what happened to going fishing?

Going now slack tides not till 1:30

Here is good link for ID: http://forum.marinedepot.com/Topic29236-11-1.aspx, probably nothing to worry about.

I think they’re pyr. But one good thing is they prey on snails only.

Great info, and very detailed pics on id-ing them in this thread, and a couple other threads on that forum…
thanks Rosti ::thumbsup::
