Sumpless 55

god to hear, my colony of zoos if probably 10 or so,lol. i try to spot feed all of the but most dont extend there sweeper.

try feeding after the lights have gone off. one thing i’ve found is to shoot some of the water i use to defrost the frozen food near the polyps. the acans will sense the scent of the food and expand their mouth structures.

got bored today and took a new video of my tank…

hey brett. i had the same prob w/lotsa my acans, then i saw how jon fed his polyps directly, and my acans all look better. +1 on andrew!!!
i feed the acans about 2 hrs after or before lights off about 2-3 X a week

hey Andrew, whats all that light blue stuff on the center rock? looks cool .

of course like anything else in this hobby you will read conflicting statements. i saw a thread on RC recently from people who “never” target feed their acans and allegedly have nice growth. it makes sense to me to directly feed the polyps, something i do about once a week sometimes more. one of the frags i bought from Dr Mac’s two months ago has already grown 6 or 7 small heads. i use a mixed diet of spirulina brine shrimp, krill and mysis

A lot of the variance in results will likely be related to differences in nutrient levels from one system to the next. A lot of the hardcore LPS keepers run skimmer less or PT skim. A well maintained, high nutrient tank will likely get similar or better growth rates with its LPS than spot fed LPS in a low nutrient tank. My few LPS in my SPS tank always did OK but never thrived and I’m sure target feeding would have helped a lot. However, balancing the needs of difficult SPS and LPS in the same system is something ive all but given up on…at least in smaller systems.

are you aware of certain LPS species being more sensitive to low nutrients? My Plerogyra has been on it’s way out for a month or so. Recently the coral has been coming back, but it’s fighting some invasive macro algea which i think is Derbesia

im reluctant to make a blanket statement because of all of the factors involved but yes, IME, my LPS seem to not only be more tolerant of higher nutrients but seem to actually do better than they have in my lower nutrient SPS system.
