Web Savvy? Enhance the DRC Home Page

As Tattoo and many others have noticed the DRC Home page is stagnant. The template we used while much better then what we had lacks the flexibility based on the amount of content we regularly post there. The goal is to make an easy to use, clean yet dynamic home page for DRC. We will work on the logo and the layout so there is little maintenance needed to keep it fresh and up to date.

The top 10 thinks that were commented to be wrong or needed were (Not in Any Order):
-The latest news is not exactly the latest - Redo joomla layout and content
-We need the ability to have a calendar to post new events
-Tank tales Picture section
-Upcoming frag swaps, seminars, new innovative ways of doing stuff. - Hints and Tips
-Meeting and event registration
-(To help keep it current) Recent Topics from Forum
-Join DRC with a link to and paypal
-High resolution Logo (Have one that was voted on but need high resolution version)
-Gallery and slide show of recent pictures
-Calculators

Not all will be implemented. Did I miss anything? Post it here.

[color=maroon]Now the big question. Are you Web Savvy to help us? We can use a template or write our own HTML page or a combo. If you can help please pm me. I have created a thread where we can get a group to discus what is possible and to bang out some ideas. If you are able to help, pm me and I will get you access to view and post in the section.

Is our server Microsoft FrontPage compatible?

We already have the calendar where we can post events, but nobody makes use of it. It is right up near my messages in the navigation bar.

That’s not an issue. FrontPage is a program not a language.
The main page we have now is a template from Joomla. It can’t be adjusted with FrontPage. I forget the program (Ted would Know)

It was mentioned a calendar that works on the home page.

When we get to the point where we are updating everything we will deligate some of the features to different people so no one gets overloaded.

Ohh right. Ok, well im kinda out of my league in this topic so ill let you guys talk then verdict_in

I dont do much with web apps, kind of a backend gu, but i do have a programming background. If you give me something, im sure i can figure it out, it just might take a little more time than someon who uses it readily.

I figure we have a lot of talented people here that may be able to help. Even if we find another Joomla template that would give the flexibility we want. They have a lot of templates but not all have what we want. The joomla templates can be manipulated but I can’t do it. Ted mentioned in the past what it would take to do it but I lost that pm.

this stuff isnt rocket science. its all templates and scripts. there is so much open source code out there that its as easy as cutting and pasting a lot of the times. you dont have to be a programmer, you just have to have the time to commit.

My thoughts…
Are you set in concrete on the Joomla/SMF setup or open to change?
See if the current server can support ASP.NET pages. Is the current server Apache or ISS based and is it on a Linux or Windows based machine?
With all of this you guys would prefer a setup that can be easily updated by anyone (provided they have sufficient priveledges) not just those with web/programming experience, correct?
If you can give me the best res you have of the current logo (is the one at the top the best res?) I can try to recreate it in a much higher quality. I’ll just look for similar pictures and remake the logo.
What kind of calculators?

Here are two sites I have done. The first is the site for a company I co-own SBNetworkConsulting www.sbnconsulting.com. This is an ASP based site. The other is a phpBB based site which is an open source messageboard/forum software to possibly replace SMF. www.xtreme-hobbys.com. Take a look on phpBB.com for more information on phpBB, its a very customizable and easy to use messageboard software. Both of the above listed sites I personally host locally on my home machine (i.e. the one I’m typing on right now).

Stagnant? Because of the template/design? I don’t think so. It’s stagnant because we don’t have anything on it. Hell, we have members that don’t even know we have a list of LFS on there. That has nothing to do with design, templates, Joomla, or the such. The “Latest News” is exactly that … the latest news posted on the website. And if we’re not updating content, that’s what will remain the Latest News. That’s how that plug-in works. So who’s ready to contribute to site content? Don’t all push to the front of the line … you’ll all get your chance …

I think the big question is who’s ready to contribute an article (or two)?

Linux/Apache/MySQL/php and no ASP.NET currently. If there’s a need/want to change that, our renewal is coming up soon.

Where is the site hosted? How much? Might want to look at HostMySite.com They are a local hosting company right in Pencader industrial park (right next to where I work currently). Cheap prices and 100% uptime except for occasional maintenance which is usually done around 2a.m.

phpBB would work great with that LAMP setup (Linux/Apache/MySQL/php).

If DRC wants to pay for a new website that is easily upgradable/ect. I can talk to my partners at SBNC and we can come up with a price, or we can keep it done by members only to reduce the cost, but you obviously loose out on the speed/support/quality end.

Are there any SLRs (Single Lamp Reflector) for VHOs? I would like to add a single VHO into the T5 setup but I’m having trouble finding a VHO for it (all I can find are 2-4 lamp relectors)

P.S. I don’t know if a mod wants to split this thread into a light discussion as thats what it has turned into.

duoservers.com
8.33/month +1.00/month (SSH access) = $112/yr

And you’re right, phpBB might have been a better choice. But, frankly, I think most of these OS packages are about the same. phpBB has a few quirks I personally don’t like, but then, each one has it’s own particular quirks.

We can argue till the cows come home about packages/templates/plug-ins etc. Until we have content to put on the site, I find that argument moot.

I agree lack of content is a problem but it is compounded by the limits of that template. We will never have enough news articles to keep the news fresh but we can post latest forum posts, have a calendar, and have a section devoted to the Tank tours section which will keep the front page updated and current. I not saying leave joomla if we can modify what we have to work. But am open to all ideas.

We can discus the details later in the other forum to keep all the ideas together. This post was gather some volunteers to see if we could do it ourselves.

Do you mean single bulb ballast??? I have never seen a single bulb ballast for VHO so I will say in my limited world they don’t exist. As for reflectors, you should be able to buy them individually.

As for a split its your topic take it where you want. As a paid premium member you can split your own topic if you want. Or pm me and I will split

I’ll volunteer my services. I can also possibly host pages if wanted to test out pages.

Currently I’ve only got 1 VHO hooked up to the ballast. I cant seem to find individual reflectors for VHO bulbs.

I added you as a moderator for the topic and you should be able to see the forum thread now.

I have never seen an individual reflector designed like a T5 for a VHO.

UVL VHO bulbs come with an internal reflector built in, and in my opinion are the best VHO actinics out there.

I honestly think you would be fine with just the T5’s. If you want to see another retrofit T5 canopy, you are also more than welcome to come see mine. I am running 6 T5’s on my 90. Two bulbs are being run on one of ronerts ballast, and the other four are being run on an icecap 660 ballast. Gives me the dawn to dusk effect.

Let me know if you are interested in taking a look at my setup.
