What are these critters?

I have about 10 of these 1-2mm wide starfish on one side pane of glass. I cannot take a photo due to their tiny size. They look like a regular old ‘pod’ until you notice their TINY legs, 5 to 6 legs with a bit of white on the tips, thats the only way you’d really notice the legs.

I’ve also noticed a couple translucent-white snail/slugs with a cream colored FLAT elongated covering/shell. They max out at 20-25mm long. They actually move quite fast, which is the reason I don’t have a photo of these yet either. I find one, isolate the live rock piece its on and by the time I get back with the camera its gone. This has only happened twice now, next time I go hunting I will plop it in a cup o’ saltwater and snap the picture.

Can anything be determined by my descriptions? I will try to get pictures tonight so we can be a but more certain.

Do you guys thing this (these new critters) are going to become a problem?

Thanks again,
Josh

Both are very good organisms for reef tank. Especially second one.

Also there is this thing under the clam, looks like the top of a duncan peeking out from btwn the clam and the sand. Either that, or the mythical greek hydra… hoping it’s not a hydra.

it’s actually a baby cracken. the thing to do is to lure unsuspecting targets near the tank and then summon the cracken. you’ll have to start with slower, easier targets though, as at such a young age it needs practice to hone its skills.

you’re welcome ::thumbsup::

WHEW!! That’s a lot easier than chopping it’s heads off one by one and cauterizing them.

thats a stomatella snail on your Powerhead

This looks to me like Aiptasia. Those you don’t want in the tank. It stings other corals.

It’s not brown like the aptasia ive seen. But its up inside my clam… how do I remove this riff raff?

The little snails are a good thing, mine get big then there mantis food. Can’t see what the last picture is. If it is a hydroid they can go crazy and get out of control just like a aptashia.

Looks like stomatella and aptasia to me. One great the other evil.

I would mix up some kalk with ro into a toothpaste consistency, take good note of which crevice its in… pull it out of water, put your paste in like spackling, and put it back trying to aim that spot towards lesser flow.
I tried scraping them out, but they always grew back quick, even from a tiny spec.

well if its a hydra, scrape it off with a pairing knife, or

Release the Kraken!

+1

You mean the calcium stuff Kalkwasser (sp?) or do you mean plumbing caulk? I want to get rid of this thing asap!

Thanks Salt

Kalkawasser ::thumbsup::

Oh NO!!
Stop that Kraken…

We added a Peppermint Shrimp (DEMON SHRIMP) and it instantly killed the Aiptasia abcd. Then last night I discovered it trying to steal food out of my already bummed out Candy Canes >:::. … Now comes the capture. I’ve rigged a “smart water” bottle into a fish trap. I have my fingers crossed. I went this route because Kalk scares the hell outta me, I really don’t want to touch that stuff.

But for future notice, Peppermint Shrimp are evil vampiric bastards, that IMO shouldn’t be added unless you have A LOT of aiptasia for it to eat. Because the instant this got hungry, even after eating 5-Star reef bar, he turned on the corals.

Anyone need one, I’ll pass this one on to anyone who needs it. That is, as soon as I catch it.

did it hurt the coral or just try to steal it’s food? I have never had an issue with them and use them in my clean up crew, and I love watching their moonlight dance at night.

I’ll take it if you can bring it monday…

And it wouldn’t be going in my 125… I had a bad experience with them myself… but in my frag tank would be fine with me… and easy to catch if not…

I did a modified water bottle, it worked great, i put some pellets in and they went for it at lights out. two of them anyway… the force was strong with the third one… it took a week verdict_in

I hope I’m not waiting a week. I didn’t see any damage exactly, but that shrimp was all up in the corals mouth. The coral is more important in this case though. If I catch it, I’ll let you know. I won’t be at the meeting, but I do have to make a stop at DPA around 6pm on Monday. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks Salt!
