If I can find out for sure they won’t kill the GBTAs I got from Andy I’d like to try one.
Icy have you read much about mixing anemones before? I know that Andy kept RBTA and GBTA in the same tank together and they seemed to do very well, but this looks very different then the species of RBTA Andy had. I don’t have a lot of experience with anemones accept for my little one eating MY fish.
They are all the same Entacmaea quadricolor. There are just a thousand different morphs. Colors, bubbles, no bubbles, tenticle length, can all be different. It even varies from tank to tank. The RBTA i got from andy bubbled in my solana but extends its tentacles about 6-8" in my DT. Regardless of what the look like, they should be able to live right on top of one another with no warfare. My tan/GBTA and RBTA had tenticles entertwined for a couple of weeks before i moved it into the solana with no problems.
Sweet, thanks for the info Shawn. Another scientific name to memorize! Like I said I’ve never really read up on them too much. Always thought there were too big of a risk with SPS.(and perhaps I was a bit bitter because the first SPS I ever got was killed off by an anemone)
I think I may use a 40 breeder I plan on emptying soon to propagate some. They still seem too expensive in retail stores for how easy they reproduce in captivity. I’ve always heard for every one that makes it to a reefers tank, 1 died in the store, 2 died on there way to the store, 1 died at the whole salers and 1 died on the way to the whole saler. To get that one in a reefers tank how many had to be collected? On top of that how many new reefers try to keep an anemone in there week old tank for there Nemo fish? Even if we don’t make an impact on the wild populations that still a lot of boxes, fuel, water, and so on to try to keep these things alive as they are shipped across the planet. (sorry for getting OT for a bit)
SnEaKyPoLoCk perhaps if you don’t sell them all to DRC members you could try selling a couple to some LFS.
That picture was right before it split. They seem to get pale right before and after they split. When my lights are on for a bit I’ll get a better pic.
One thing i have learned about BTA’s is that there are no absolutes. The first time you say “A BTA willl never do that” will be the first day it does. With that said, generally a BTA will only split if its stressed. A splitting BTA is usually a pretty good indicator that something in the tank is unstable or undesireable for your anemone. Again, im not saying its always the case, but most of the time it is. Personally, i know all of my splits have been a result of parameter swings.
On the otherhand, it makes these guys the ideal captive bred animal. Hopefully, i will be culturing these guys sooner than later and not by the barbaric method of cutting them in half.

I actually agree with the splitting usally under stress part, but I think that these particular ones are the exception. I have kept these in my large tank with the other anemone which should be far more picky, and that one has done nothing but prosper. These ones on the other hand have been splitting like crazy, and the young dont die at all… they grow untill they can split too.
i live in smyrna. i can get there almost ANY time you want except for tomorrow night. i’d love one and hopefully a percula will enjoy it. i’d even pay for the rock, so he or she can stay put.
