No, I’m not dozing at all. My calcium has tested around 500 every time I have checked it with my test kit. I’ll try taking a water sample in. I asked my girlfriend what color she thought the pH was on the test kit, and she believed it was closer to 8.2. I’m a little colorblind
Still no shrimp sightings. I think he died
That sucks man. Wish I could get myself another shrimp but the cube is a little tight and I would be afraid of my long nose.
Threw a poly pad in the sump to see if there’s any metals or anything… out of ideas otherwise for the coral problems. I also got a Red Sea pro test kit to double check the calcium alk and magnesium. Thanks Black Friday deals!
Nothing on the poly pad. Just a barely tinted white color. Any idea how long they take to absorb stuff from the water?
I haven’t had luck with those poly pads. Did you get your test kits yet? I’d start there before trying any fixes. A few large water changes could help.
I just got my Red Sea test kit for calcium, alk, and magnesium since I didn’t have a way to check magnesium before. At this point, most of my sps are looking like their toast. I guess I’ll just wait a while before trying them again… maybe my aquarium isn’t aged enough or something. I had read quite a few threads of people who tried sps at 6 months and couldn’t keep them and then tried them at a year and they were fine. I would think if something was so terribly off it would affect my LPS and softies too… yet hammer, frogspawn, torch, etc etc all look perfectly happy.
I tend to think “New tank syndrome†is more about the person than the tank. You seem to be on top of things so I’d be surprised if your levels were bouncing around.
I’m at a loss otherwise. I’ve bugged Donavon about it for a long time and he’s out of ideas too :SURRENDER
Now that you have the test kits, did you do them? What are your levels?
Those Hanna checkers are nice for phosphate and kh. Forget the calcium one. I bought it and the steps are so ridiculous that I will probably just sell it and stick to the drops.
What are all of your parameters now?
Another idea would be just take this slow. Sps are very finicky when it comes to any changes.
Did you lose everything?

So my alk comes up at between 7.8 and 8 @ 2050. Magnesium is about 1640. Calcium comes back around compared to the API test kit. I’ve had experience with titration getting my first degree so I would say these are pretty accurate.
I’ve pretty much lost all SPS at this point… I see algae growth on the Mille at this point…
Can you test some fresh salt water? Your mag and calcium shouldn’t be that high without dosing.
I can test again when I get home. Just mixed up 10G of fresh for a water change yesterday. I can even bring water tonight to the meeting if you want lol
Are you still 0 on nitrate and phosphates?
What about salinity are you checking with hydrometer? I prefer the hydrometer as it has been easier and more accurate then my refractometer.
What about temp? I like to use a glass thermometer as a back up every so many days to make sure my temp sensors are staying calibrated.
If this wasn’t a swing of some sort even electric current going through the tank can sometimes wipe things out. Though when this has ever been a issue my wellso brain always shriveled up to warn me when normally it’s super puffed and tentacles out every day.
If you can’t figure it out just slow down enjoy your fish and do your regular water changes and after a month or 2 try adding something more simple then branch out from there. Whatever this is might just have to run it’s course and there is no point is going crazy over it and burning yourself out on something you do enjoy with or without sps.
Lastly there is always the triton test to verify what’s really going on.

Haven’t checked the nitrates and phosphates since the last time but I would believe they’re still at 0. That’s basically the point I’m at now is to just let it run it’s course. All the lps, softies, and birdsnest are fine so I’ll just let it go for a while and try again. I have been using a hydrometer and ordered a refractometer for Black Friday to make sure my hydrometer is at least close. Temp is 79 with a good old stick on crystal thermometer. My softies have never looked happier… It just makes me rack my brain when everything looked happy and had good growth in the beginning but now looks like ::hitsthefan::
Bring samples, I’ll bring my kits for alk, calc and my refractometer.
I’ll make sure to bring tank water and a sample from the freshly mixed tonight.
Excellent. I’m bringing my calc, alk, mag, potassium and refractometer. Let’s get sciencey!
